Will My Milk Supply Decrease When Baby Sleeps Through the Night

Oh Love Amy,

Thank yous so much for all your sage guidance in the past regarding my wedding wearing apparel, the pregnancy calendar and bounce dorsum!

So at that place is one question that is running through my mind…my sweet son, who will exist vii weeks old tomorrow is starting to slumber in longer stretches at nighttime.  He had been nursing the normal every iii hours and the last two nights he has been sleeping a six hr stretch, YAY! Should I be waking up to pump as the outset three hour mark passes?  My pediatrician says do non wake him to consume, and then I laurels that.  My concern is will my milk supply decrease and will I have enough milk pumped when I go back to work in almost a month.

Any suggestions would be so helpful.  I am actually enjoying this and want to keep it going as much as possible!

Cheers!
A

Oh, goodness gracious woman, Savor YOUR Sleep. I mean, I would. The but reason to wake upward to pump in the middle of the night is your own comfort level, i.e. you're waking up anyhow with rock hard and leaking boobs. And even so, I'd probably only pump a pocket-size scrap to save the discomfort, because pumping yourself empty will just tell your body that yes, that eye-of-the-night meal is all the same needed, and volition repeat the side by side night. If there's absolutely no other point in the mean solar day when you can pump milk for piece of work, I SUPPOSE you could employ the half-dozen-hour-stretch for an actress session, but again, I would probably focus more on getting some freaking sleep.

As for your supply "decreasing," that'due south kind of a deceptive word. Your supply is based on demand. So technically, yes, remove the demand and the supply will adapt accordingly. But it's not really a "decrease" this early on, more of a rejiggering of the schedule. Your infant ate every two to three hours at first because he was tiny and his tiny stomach could merely handle tiny amounts of milk. At present he's growing so he's able to accept in more milk at each feeding…and thus, each feeding will hold him over a little longer than before. Then instead of drinking ii ounces at, permit's say, viii pm, 10 pm and 1 am, he's probably drinking something more like three or four ounces at 8 pm and 1 am. And then even though he's skipping that ten pm session, it's all balancing out in the end, and your body'south product hasn't actually gone downwards. If that makes sense.

Information technology's the beauty of breastfeeding on demand: Instead of staring at the clock and worrying endlessly when your babe sleeps through a feeding considering it all has to be perfectly regimented, you tin relax and permit your babe and your boobs figure it out together. As long as your baby is gaining weight well and you lot aren't experiencing whatsoever specific breastfeeding bug (mastitis, documented supply issues, etc.), it's Admittedly OKAY for you to follow his cues and sleep equally long as he sleeps.

But if you're waking upwardly anyhow and feel uncomfortable and find yourself fretting most your stash of pumped milk, go alee and pump. IF You Desire TO. Just don't experience obligated or guilty if you'd rather whorl over and conk back out, though, is my principal point. Personally, when I was stockpiling milk, I preferred pumping for an extra 10 minutes or so after the get-go morning time feed, and then pumping correct before I went to bed (bold the babe had been nursed and put to bed earlier). But that was simply me, because I am very grumpy and atrocious and protective of my own need for substantial REM slumber. (Which I don't get in curt, ii-to-3-hr sleep bursts.)

And while I totally hate to be That Guy, y'all may want to ready yourself that this six-hr stretch might not be permanent. Newborns are really catchy like that, making you call up their sleep progression is linear and will continue to move forrard an actress hour every other night or so, until ta-daaaa! Sleeping all night, every night. All of my babies slept their absolute best ever around the two- or three-month marks, so everything kind of promptly went to hell for awhile once the growth spurts and sleep regressions and early teething started. I know this is similar, the JERKIEST WAY EVER to finish a column and I AM SORRY, simply I know if I was a get-go-time mom trying to decide whether to wake up voluntarily to pump or but enjoy my slumber, I'd appreciate a heads' up that hey, this might be a shorter window than you realize and in a couple weeks yous might detect yourself back in the every two-to-three hours grind.

Or you might non! Every babe is dissimilar, of class, and no matter what happens with his sleep or what yous decide to exercise with your boobs in the acting, I wish yous aught but the absolute maximum corporeality of sweet, precious slumber possible.
